Training of tour companies & riverboat operators on saftey & quality

The Youth Empowerment Project in partnership with the Gambia Tourism Board and The Gambia Maritime Administration conducted a 4-day intensive training on Riverboat safety, quality, hygiene, hospitality, and tourism services targeting tour companies and riverboat operators. The training which took place in Banjul from the 8th to the 11th of November 2018, is aimed at improving product development, safety, and quality of tours, tourism and hospitality services along the River Gambia to meet international standards.

Represented by the president of category B Tour Operators Mr. Alieu Bayo, the fifteen beneficiaries commended YEP for pioneering a training of such focus and impact. The participants pledge to be ambassadors in their various sectors ensuring to share their experience while implementing operational safety and delivery of quality services.

The Youth Empowerment Project funded by the European Union under the trust fund for Africa and implemented by International Trade Centre in partnership with the Ministry of Trade, and the Ministry of Youths and Sport of the Gambia was particularly applauded by the representative of the Gambia Maritime Administration Mr. Gumbo Touray for taking the lead on this initiative and complimenting government’s effort to ensure safety along the waters of the Gambia.

The Director of Quality Control of the Gambia Tourism Board Mr. Abubacarr Camara affirmed the significance of building professional capacities of service providers in delivering standard products and services, safety and quality along the river Gambia which he says will contribute to the overall attractiveness of the Gambia as a tourism destination.

The closing and certification ceremony included a briefing session for stakeholders and tourism business owners on activities, objectives, and outcomes of the training by expert trainers in Maritime and Hospitality operations Geoff Devito and Captain Alan MacAry.
