The International Trade Centre (ITC) through the Localizing SDGs Project and the Activating Skills and Employment Opportunities Project, and in partnership with the Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities (GALGA), with funding from the United Nation Human Security Trust Fund and the German government through the Programme Migration for Development (PME) is offering Cash for Work opportunities to labourers and masons in the rural Gambia, and Greater Banjul Area. The initiative will support the construction of a weaving facility at the Bakoteh Skills Centre, the One-stop Shop Entrepreneurship Centre in Farafenni, and the Hospitality Training Center in Mansakonko. The cash for work will cover construction services such as concreting, trenching, mixing cement, block production, bricklaying reading designs and following patterns. The job opportunity will also provide knowledge and skills transfer to workers in the production and masonry of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB), which will be used to construct the centres. CSEB is a climate-friendly building material that is highly durable, cost-effective and promotes affordable housing and sustainable development.

Construction Company: Mass Construction

Project Duration: 2-6 months (depending on construction site)

Payment Modalities: Daily, weekly, or monthly at a competitive market rate

Number of workers required: Bakoteh 10, Farafeni 25 and Mansakonko 25

Who can apply?

Must be Gambian citizen

Must be aged 18-45

Willing to do concrete, trenching and block production

No prior experience is necessary for daily workers, but applicants must demonstrate a strong interest and commitment to the requirements of the job

Youth from all targeted regions are eligible to apply

Brick-makers from youth groups currently involved in earth block making

Masons must possess at least three years of experience in construction and knowledge in CSEB Masonry

Youth, young women, returnees, and early school leavers from the communities are particularly encouraged to apply
